Berlin is the best city in the world. My favorite one as I was born here and lived here basically my whole life (except for the months and years I was travelling abroad). Even if I am going to travel, I know that in the end, I will always come back because Berlin – that’s my home.
I love Berlin in summer time because the city is so vibrant, alive and colorful during those summer months from June to September. There are always so many events that you don’t know where to go first. ^^ However, Berlin is always worth a visit also in winter. I will write a post about a winter itinerary and what to do on rainy days later this year.
As you have so many great activities in Berlin, there are often some great deals to find on https://www.groupon.de/ where you can save a couple of euros.
Berlin is one of the greenest capitals in the world and therefore you can relax in one of Berlin’s beautiful parks. My favorite ones, where you can go for a run, a stroll and take a book with you to relax in the grass are Tiergarten (especially a great way to visit the Zoo before or after your walk), Rehberge (where you can relax at the beach of Strandbad Plötzensee and get a cocktail at the beach bar), Mauerpark (where you will meet all the creative people of Berlin and every Sunday is here the biggest flea market of Berlin. You can enjoy one of the best sunsets over Berlin from up here with a good pic-nick as well), Volkspark Friedrichshain (where you also can play volleyball) and Preußenpark (where you get the best outdoor Thai Food, see details in the Outdoor Food section).
On a hot day in Berlin, cool off at one of Berlin’s great lakes. My favorite ones are Plötzensee, Wannsee, Tegeler See or Kiessee.
Another option would be to go swimming in one of the outdoor pools in Berlin like Sommerbad Humboldthain, Sommerbad Pankow and Strandbad Wannsee.
Next to the open parks listed above are other ones which are taken care of another company Grün Berlin Gruppe (Green Berlin Group) and are very special. My favorite ones are:
- Tempelhofer Feld: the biggest open green space in the middle of the city where you also can rent some bikes or play outside minigolf
- Park am Gleisdreieck: an urban city park which had to be created as a result that companies where allowed to build their buildings at Potsdamer Platz. A green oasis where you can go inline skating, bowling or joining one of the sports teams
- Gärten der Welt (Gardens of the World): a unique experience to enjoy international garden art
- Britzer Garten: “the most beautiful garden in Berlin” as I have read, heard and seen
- Spreepark: It is the old fun park of the city which had to close because the last owner ran away with all the money…I even went there as a child while it was still open and have a lot of great memories in connection with that park. Now it is a kind of “lost park” which is always interesting for a visit and to join one of the guided tours.

In 2017 till 15th October is the International Garden Exhibiton in Berlin (IGA Berlin) which is incredible beautiful with all the different flowers from all over the world in all their beauty. There are also some special events like concerts, readings or theater in the afternoon or evenings where you need to book different tickets in advance online.

After all the breathtaking flowers from all over the world at IGA Berlin, you should visit either Berlin Zoo or Berlin Tierpark while you are in Berlin. Both are amazing with a lot of nature and great animals.
For a fun and sportive outdoor activity, you should go tree climbing for a day. There are really good tree climbing offers in Berlin in the woods like Waldhochseilgarten Jungfernheide or Kletterwald Wuhlheide. I have visited both of them and it is a lot of fun. They offer different levels according to an age group and with different heights differing from 3 to 17 meters high.

After a great day full of activities and Berlin exploring, you will enjoy a warm summer night relaxing and picnicking in one of the open-air cinemas in Berlin. For your pic-nick you are usually allowed to bring everything with you except for glass bottles. There are plenty of them and you will find an interesting movie every night in one of them for sure: https://www.zitty.de/freiluftkinos-in-berlin/
Dancing at Strandbar Mitte in Monbijou Park is already legendary. Every day is a different dance stile which you can learn or practice. Monday to Friday it starts at 8 pm and on Saturday and Sunday it starts at 5 pm. The stiles are: Monday Swing, Tuesday Cha Cha, Walzer & Co, Wednesday Argentinian Tango, Thursday Salsa, Friday Swing, Saturday Swing, Sunday Argentinian Tango.
Enjoy Berlin by bike
Berlin is a very flat city and with all the cycling ways it is perfect for exploring it by bike. You will be faster from one must-see to another and at the same time you can train some of your muscles to enjoy more ice-cream or another cheesecake (see outdoor food below). ^^ The best and pretty cheap way is, to use the CALL-A-BIKE from Deutsche Bahn, sponsored by LIDL. You need to register up front and pay an annual fee of just 3,00 Euro and then you can start to rent the bikes. It is 1,00 Euro for 30 minutes and a maximum of 15,00 Euro per day. As you usually drive from one site to another max. 30 minutes and then just leave it there and do some more sightseeing it is more rentable than to rent one for the whole day. You will need to download the “Call a Bike”-App to find and rent your bicycles each time. As I have my own bike in Berlin, I never used the system in Berlin, but I did already use it a lot in Hamburg and Cologne and it is super easy, cheaper than public transportation and a lot of fun. A friend of mine, Felix, he uses it in Berlin and highly recommends it for the city as well.
Register and rent your bikes here: https://www.lidl-bike.de/de
If you want to cycle for a little bit longer, I highly recommend to follow the cycling way along the old Berlin wall (“Berliner Mauerweg”). You will get through the main city and also North and South along beautiful nature.
Moreover, you can cycle through beautiful nature surrounding Berlin like Grunewald, around Wannsee or to some castles in and around Berlin like Schloss Niederschönhausen, Schloss Charlottenburg, Schloss Sanssouci in Potsdam, Schloss Diedersdorf or Schloss Genshagen.
Berlin offers great bike tours as well in case you prefer a guided tour. I never went on one but heard great things about it. They even got some prizes for them. The start varies depending on the selected tour. The starting point is 5 mins away from the TV tower, Alexanderplatz. They recommend to book a tour in advance online – even though that it isn’t a must. In case you go on a tour, please leave a comment below and share your experience. 😊

Enjoy Berlin by boat
Berlin’s center is divided by the river Spree. If you go on a boat trip along the river in the city center you will see the main attractions from the water like Museumsinsel (Museum’s island), Regierungsviertel (government district), Berlin wall East Side Gallery, Hauptbahnhof (Main train station Berlin) and a looooooooot of bridges as Berlin has with 916 bridges about the double amount of bridges than Venice.
There are several companies who offer a boat trip and the best idea would be to go to one of the piers like near the train station Hackescher Markt and have a look which company leaves soon and go on board and enjoy! 😊 Usually the prices are more or less pretty similar.
The other option would be to rent a pedal or rowing boat and to explore one of the city’s lakes and relax on the water and in the sunshine. At most of the lakes are boat rentals. The most central boat rental probably would be the one at Café am Neuen See in Tiergarten. If you are going there, make sure to bring some time to explore the whole beauty of the nature in Tiergarten and afterwards to grab a beer at Café am Neuen See in an idyllic outside atmosphere (details in the Outdoor food section).
The best ice-cream store in Berlin is Hockey Pockey. They always change the ice-cream flavors and it is a surprise each and every time you get there what they have as a new creation. I am totally addicted to the Passionfruit ice-cream with white chocolate. Woooow, just writing about it, it seems that I have to go there after finishing the post for you. ^^
Eispatisserie Hockey Pockey
Stargarder Str. 73, 10437 Berlin (from mid-August on they want to open a new shop at the train station Vinetastraße, Pankow)
Opening hours: Monday to Sunday 12 pm to 22 pm
You will get the best cheesecake from Café Dreikäsehoch. There are three different locations in Berlin: Charlottenburg, Prenzlauer Berg and Teltow (as Neuendorff Bäckerei). There is another one which sells the same cakes in Potsdam as Café Guam. Before you go to one of them, make sure that you are coming with an empty stomach because you will want to eat them all. hahaha

- 4 different locations in Teltow, Kleinmachnow and Stahnsdorf. Have a look online for more information: http://www.neuendorff-baeckerei.de/standorte/
The best outdoor Thai Food is served in Preußenpark (also called from Berlin people just “Thai Park”) near the train station Fehrbelliner Platz. On weekends at around 12 am the normal park starts to get crowded with Asian people, selling their delicious food. You will need time to decide and taste your way through so many different great dishes. For a Thai Park Food Day, bring your own blanket to sit on the grass, money, suncream and time.
Preußenpark, Brandenburgische Str., 10707 Berlin
Opening hours: warm and good weather conditions: Saturday and Sunday 12 am – 9 pm, good weather and sunshine days also during the week.
For a perfect final of the day, I highly recommend to grab a beer in one of Berlin’s outside beer gardens (Biergarten). My favorite one is located in the middle of the city park Tiergarten at the lake Neuer See. It is a lovely Café am Neuen See with chains of lights in the trees and a romantic atmosphere. You are in the middle of the nature even though that you are in the heart of Berlin’s city centre.
Café am Neuen See
Lichtensteinallee 2, 10787 Berlin
Telephone: +49 30 254 4930
Opening hours: Monday to Sunday 9 am till midnight
In case you prefer to eat on top of one of Berlin’s famous roofs with a stunning view over Berlin and a great atmosphere, you will love Klunkerkranich. It isn’t easy to find as it is on top of a parking lot of the shopping center Neukölln Arkaden. You need to enter the shopping center, take the elevator to the top floor, walk through the parking lot and up a little ramp. But once you are there, I am sure you will fall in love with this place! It is mostly open-air and offers a stunning view of the city in combination with good food and a big choice at the bar.
Karl-Marx-Straße 66, 12043 Berlin, on top of the parking lot of the shopping center Neukölln Arkaden
Opening hours: Monday to Saturday 10 am – 2 am, Sunday 12 pm – 2 am
I hope you are going to enjoy my beautiful city as much as I do! Every corner and every minute offers something special in Berlin. Just explore and enjoy! 😊
