Paraty was for years in the top 10 of my bucket list of places to visit in Brazil. The small city in the state of Rio de Janeiro combines everything I love: preserved historical heritage, mountains, beaches and an intense agenda of cultural events. I had such high expectations that I was afraid to get disappointed. Moreover, it was my first trip traveling alone. But it is difficult to be disappointed with Paraty which seems to be more like a city right out of a history book. Especially if you do the tour visiting Trindade as well which is one of the most beautiful beach destinations I’ve ever seen and that reminded me of Thailand. It could only get better if you are traveling with friends or family and if you would go during the week of the International Literary Festival of Paraty (FLIP) which takes place this year from 26th to 30th July (maybe next year, right Fred or Julie?).
Here are some tips to enjoy Paraty and Trindade:
How to get there
The bus company Costa Verde connects the cities Rio de Janeiro – Paraty. It offers various times leaving the different cities. The journey lasts about 4:30 hours. The ticket costs an average of R$ 83,45. For those who want to go straight from the airport to Paraty, just take the frescão (comfortable bus with air-con) to Rio’s New Bus Terminal (Novo Terminal Rodoviário). For those who have a driver’s license, it is worth it to rent a car because from Rio to Santos is one of the most beautiful scenic highways I’ve ever traveled in the world.
Where to stay
Paraty offers several accommodation options, hotels, hostels, villas and hostels. Try to stay in the historical center. I stayed in a private room at Che Lagarto Paraty, invited by the hostel.
In Trindade there are also some accommodation options, but as the connection by bus between the center of Paraty and the town of Trindade is very easy, I believe it is better to stay in the center of Paraty.
It is very important to have a look into the event calendar because in these periods Paraty is fully booked and it is necessary to reserve well in advance. For example for FLIP, reservations are made up to one year in advance.
